Expedition Finance

Dear friends,

In 2001, I set out on a personal journey which I never knew would come define a large part of who I am--- the first step being in Tanzania to Mount Kilimanjaro. The journey has taken me to the ends of the planet, to interesting new places and has allowed me to meet new people, learn about different cultures, while trying to reach the highest peak of every continent. The journey has been filled with successes and failures, injury and death, search and rescue, and friendship and teamwork.

Of the seven continental summits, I have attempted six and succeeded on five. Having failed to reach the summits of Everest in 2005 and Aconcagua 2003, I had to re-climb both to complete the goal. Although Aconcagua beat me in 2003, I returned to Aconcagua in 2006 with a great team which summitted 4 of 5 members. Recently, I was fortunate enough to summit Vinson in Antarctica --- the 5th of my 7 summits quest. This leaves Everest and Kosciusko (Australia).

In less than 13 months, I plan to have set foot on top of Mount Everest and to return safely to my home in Munich… This decision means that I need to begin training and work to finance my Everest 2010 bid. I have been so lucky to have support of friends and family, and now I need to ask again for your help.

Wilde Adventures Magazine

As we have stepped firmly into the age of “me TV”, “I publishing”, Twitter and Facebook, I figured that it would be a great way to involve all of you in my personal quest to complete an almost decade long project--- The Seven Summits, by creating an online publication tracking plans and progress of the expedition.

I will be establishing my own weekly publication, which will set out to describe the various aspects of bringing Everest to reality. Financing, training, logistics, communication, equipment, teamwork, challenges / goal setting, success / failure, and most importantly safety--- all topics which I intend to cover over the course of the next 56 weeks.

How much does an expedition cost? How do you manage your time? What is your daily training routine? What kind of equipment are you taking along? Which route will you take? What kind of perils will you face along the way? How do you go to the bathroom at 7000 meters? What are your teammates like? What’s the food like? How do you stay clean healthy? Weather/ cold? Tell me your thoughts. Why would anyone ever want to do this?

This ain’t Hillary’s Everest or Mallory’s Everest, it will be Wilde’s Everest---

I will do my best to personalize this experience, sharing my concerns, emotions, fears and dreams as I march step by step closer to Tibet. I will publish photos on the topics, and open the discussion up for you to ask questions and interact with me and the others which will join this adventure too. It will be interactive, so I may even integrate some of your ideas into my preparation and execution of plans. Video, training files, dietary facts and plans, equipment lists, interviews will all be included here. For the virtual/ armchair adventurer, I will do my best to enable you to see it how I see it.

I am asking that those of you interested in subscribing to the journal, transfer $20 to a paypal account. The funds collected will go directly to support the costs of the expedition and all excess funds will be transferred to The Muscular Dystrophy Association of America. If you decide you are interested, please respond to this with your email address, which I will send details of how to register.

Presentation/ Dinner Series

Additionally, I would like to announce other means to support-

I will be setting up two slide shows in Europe this summer and two in the USA. They will consist of a dinner together with a 90 minute slide show/ presentation of my 7 summits experiences. Afterwards, we will be having a raffle, for which I am seeking corporate donations of products to be raffled off to support the expedition as well. Locations- Munich, Moscow, New York City, and Raleigh.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I apologize for this mass solicitation. However, I think all of you have an idea of what a massive undertaking this is. If you do not feel like financially supporting, I would kindly ask that you forward this along to your friends who enjoy adventure travel, mountaineering or simply would like to support a worthy cause. I estimate from my global friends list of 1500 people, you all alone could seriously help me to meet this challenge.

Many thanks to all of you over the years, I hope that we can together reach the top of the highest mountain in 2010.

Best regards from sunny Moscow,

James
